It has been wonderful seeing the positive changes in X. The ever growing confidence and sense of belonging along with how happy he tells us he is at Moxham House is testament to the care and understanding you show him. Thank you.
Moxham House is our residential care home, staffed 24 hours a day and is a beautiful Edwardian building situated in a quiet residential area within walking distance of Tunbridge Wells town centre. Under Crossways’ care, it has been a home to many people with poor mental health for more than 50 years; people who have been supported to live as fulfilling a life as possible for them.
The house is set in large gardens with plenty of quiet spaces and has its own parking.
Moxham House is CQC registered and staff work within national care and support standards to ensure that residents receive person-centred, appropriate care to meet their individual needs.
Our residential home, Moxham House, provides a person-centred, recovery-focused service with day programmes tailored to each individual's needs.
Referrals to our residential care service at Moxham House are only via mental health professional services, whether they be in Kent and Medway or out of area.
The staff team is led by a qualified and experienced registered manager (who is also Crossways Community’s safeguarding lead), experienced deputy managers and an RMN. Each resident has a named key worker who will work closely with them to deliver a person-centred approach to care and support. Staff are available on the premises 24 hours a day with two sleeping in each night. All full time staff have NVQ3 or above or are working towards this qualification, with some staff members developing their skills further with higher qualification levels. There is additional mandatory training provided by internal and external trainers, plus specific relevant courses to equip the team with the best understanding and knowledge available. Staff turnover is extremely low, no agency staff are employed and this helps provide a sense of familiarity and belonging. Staff continuity helps to develop the aims and goals of residents and provides consistent and compassionate care.
Our service is for those with a primary diagnosis of a mental health condition and we additionally cater for secondary diagnoses of Learning Disability (LD) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The service is designed to provide a quality of life that is enriching, person-centred, flexible and robust. Each resident has a dedicated key worker with whom they develop appropriate care and support plans and day programmes which incorporate a model of recovery, strategies to address and manage issues and possible difficulties, and encourage the development of therapeutic relationships. These are reviewed regularly to develop and build on progress already made. Strategies that have been successful in hospital are continued where appropriate, in partnership with referring teams. Strong relationships are valued and maintained with external providers including forensic services. There is a monthly house meeting where residents are encouraged to invest in the house community and help to shape decisions for improving the service provided to them. We create time and space to support each resident with both one-to-one and group support and encourage a listening environment to help each individual recover or rediscover their potential.
Crossways Community delivers care and support to people with poor mental health – recognising potential, encouraging independence, and promoting self-worth. It is fundamental to everything we do to ensure the welfare and protection of anyone who accesses our services. We are committed to the belief that the protection of vulnerable people from harm and abuse is everybody’s responsibility and aim to ensure that all those associated with working for the organisation act appropriately in response to any concerns around abuse. Crossways Community provides compulsory annual and ad-hoc safeguarding training for all care, support and administration staff.
Privacy and safety are of the utmost importance to us. Residents receive keys with access to their own room and all exterior doors so that they can come and go as they wish at any time, whilst keeping the staff team updated of their movements.
Facilities at Moxham House include an art studio, large and small communal spaces both indoors and out for group activities and private conversations, laundry room, a pool table and gym equipment.
Residents can relax in the extensive gardens, or participate in planting flowers and vegetables for the house or themselves. The gardens attract a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, and in the summer we have regular gardening days which often involve a barbecue.
Group activities include a music group, football and gardening. There are a variety of quiet places if that is preferred, other than residents’ own rooms.
There are weekly outings to activities such as swimming, golf and shopping and also other one-off outings to, for example, the pantomime at Christmas, the beach in the summer, car boot sales or farm visits.
Groups of residents and staff also go on holidays, both in the UK and abroad. Residents are encouraged to give suggestions for holidays and we try our best to meet their needs and wishes. We support our residents to budget for trips and obtain travel documentation. For those who can’t manage the distance or larger groups, we also provide alternative breaks.
Other supported activities are available and new suggestions are always welcomed. We can also help residents to engage with new or existing hobbies or voluntary work when they are ready. We encourage further education including in-house training such as first aid, food hygiene, etc. and external learning where appropriate.
Healthy and well-balanced meals are provided and we encourage people to cook some of their own meals with support if necessary. Although the main kitchen is not open at night, tea, coffee and snacks are always available in the dining room.
Where residents are also supported by external professionals, we will work in partnership with them; they will often visit Moxham House or appointments can be arranged externally, which we will assist with as required.
Everyone at Moxham House is treated equally. We all respect each other’s beliefs, chosen lifestyle and views.
House meetings are held monthly and are a space for the residents to tell us what they would like and changes we could consider.
